In January 1879, a small garrison of British soldiers threw up a makeshift barricade, and successfully defended the storehouse and field hospital at Rorke's Drift, against a large army of ferocious Zulu warriors. This heroic stand has been written about extensively, and inspired the epic film Zulu, but information about the men who took part has not been quite so readily available - until now. Who were these men who made such a stubborn resistance when all seemed lost, and what legacy have they left with us? Most were ordinary men who remained so throughout their lives, and some returned to a struggle for survival equal to that which they had endured at Rorke's Drift. In some cases their lives were rocked by heartbreak and terrible tragedy.
Kris Wheatley first learned about Rorke's Drift after seeing a painting of the battle in the house of her grand-parents, and later learned that the possible artist was her great-grandfather, Private Caleb Wood, one of the defenders. With this fascinating inspiration she set about finding out more, and the six volumes of LEGACY are the result of years of painstaking, in-depth research, the standard of which has never been equalled. Kris donates all her royalties to the regimental museum. Each volume of Legacy contains an easy-on-the-eye text A4 large format pages, illustrated with many exclusive pictures.
