Private Jack White of the King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment, was awarded the Victoria Cross for devotion to duty during the crossing the Dialah River in Mesopotamia (Iraq), First World War, 7/8 March 1917. He is pictured as he tried to withdraw a boat full of injured comrades out of range of enemy fire.
