Bugler Robert Hawthorne of the 52nd Light Infantry, was awarded the Victoria Cross for valour during the relief of Delhi, in the Indian Mutiny, 14 September 1857. He is depicted assisting a wounded officer under fire, as British troops stormed the Kashmir Gate.
