Captain Charles Russell and Private Anthony Palmer of the Grenadier Guards, were awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry during the battle of Inkerman, Crimean War, 5 November 1854. The Guards assaulted the Sandbag Battery, and the picture illustrates the close hand-to-hand combat.
